NARRATIVE

 Narrative: blog task

Complete the following questions using the Media Factsheet resource available on the Media Shared drive.

You'll find them in our Media Factsheet archive: M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets. You can also access them online here if you use your Greenford Google login.

Read Media Factsheet 14 - Telling Stories: The Media's Use of Narrative and answer the following questions:

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

Disney’s “Moana” (2018) can help elucidate this approach to understanding narrative.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

This is the opening scene of Stranger Things a Netflix series;as shown its starts with the disequilibrium of the man  running from something terrifying, which we dont see off(enigma codes),we know this because of the fear in his face and the rapid pace.Based of his outfit we can tell that he work in a lab as he is wearing a lab coat and seems like he is in a lab based on the setting. The lighting is dark and slightly green which makes it mysterious because to the audiences eyes its a blur and suspenseful,

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
Harry Potter (2001-2011) – source: Warner Bros.

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.
presence-absence dichotomy
.heroes and villains

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
The dominant ideology is emphasised by the binary opposition between villains and heroes, which typically leads to a new equilibrium when the hero prevails.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
Action codes pique viewers' curiosity about the steps the protagonists will take to resolve the situation, whereas Fear of the unknown is evoked in audiences via enigma codes.
7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series)-Each episode's narrative arc is often concluded at the conclusion.
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)-Conflict will not be resolved in individual episodes; instead, it will continue to build until the series' conclusion, barring a cliffhanger.
  • Mixed narrative-There are episodic and overarching tales in this.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)-Its story is told in a continual fashion.
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
As you can see in an advert it always brings up a problem but also behind that it also comes up with a resolution.
